Home: Welcome

"Soprano Monica Rose Slater exemplifies how to make every piece of a phrase — the inhalation, the swell, the release — into deeply purposeful musicianship, and she frequently lets a melody take her over, as if she’s possessed by it."

I’m Monica, a Brazilian-American singer, actor, and educator. My favorite projects are musically, narratively dense works that live in the cracks of genre. I have a Master's of Music from San Francisco Conservatory and I’ve had the privilege of performing with companies all across the Bay Area, working with Word for Word, Oakland Theater Project, Lamplighters Music Theater,  Cinnabar, Berkeley Playhouse, and 42nd Street Moon.

I’m committed to amplifying Latinx voices and sharing rich cultural experiences through the arts. I produced the Brazilian opera “Domitila” in 2021 and a concert titled "Saudade" in 2023.

I’ve had the opportunity to study abroad at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz and was a Fulbright Semi-Finalist for the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music Award in Budapest.

I enjoy working with aspiring artists and offer private voice lessons. I also teach voice at the community choir Music Education for Everyone.

When I’m not on stage or in the classroom, you might find me exploring the Bay Area on rollerblades, indulging in creative hobbies, or immersing myself in the world of art and literature.

Two Sisters and a Piano Readings Poster

Two Sisters and a Piano by Nilo Cruz

My colleagues Ben Chau-Chiu and Megan Mateosky and I are producing the play Two Sister's and a Piano by Nilo Cruz.

We are excited to share this story with the Bay Area and have received Theater Bay Area Ca$h grant to help make it happen.

To start, we’re holding free/donation-based staged readings on March 15 at 7 PM and March 16 at 2 PM in the studio space of Oakland Theater Project. These readings will be a crucial step toward our goal of mounting a full production in August (dates pending).

We are still in need additional funds to cover venue costs, design, and fair wages for our team. If you would like to help us bring this powerful story of resilience and love to life, you'll find our GoFundMe linked here. Thank you for supporting independent theater and emerging artists!
